So, its time to do some math and count how successful I was(n't) at reading this year.

But first, I have to mention two books I finished in 2022; I missed last Wednesday:

Lot: Stories by Bryan Washington - This is phenomenal. I love the author's voice. It feels authentic. It reminds me of Junot Diaz without the *ahem* accusations. I'll be looking forward to more of his books.

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion - If ever a time to read this, it was now. I ate it up, I was unable to put it down. I felt seen. I went along for every emotion. God, I want to write like her. Shit, why would I ever write a single word when she's done it better.

==And now, onto the show==
2022!
books read (includes poetry)= 28
comics= 36

total=64

==what was the best things I read?==

For the first time, quite possibly ever, my two favorite book-books are non-fiction:

We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir by Samra Habib - An amazing memoir of an amazing person and an amazing read. I can't recommend this one enough.

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion - Maybe the timing was right, maybe my mood was right. But who the fuck cares. I could probably re-read this book for all eternity and get something new from it every time.

And my favorite graphic novels:

Ain't Burned All the Bright by Jason Reynolds (Author), Jason Griffin (Illustrator) - This was just everything. The art is phenomenal. The message is poetry. the subject matter timely and important. Easy quick read too.

After the Rain by John Jennings (Adapter), Nnedi Okorafor (Author), David Brame (Illustrator) - We are highlighting Black comics this year. This horror comic captured my imagination and was riveting from start to finish. The art is beautiful. Everything about this one rules.

==Here's a look back at the past years:==

2021
22 books
79 comics
total of 101

2020
21 books
106 comics
total of 127

2019
17 books
106 comics
total of 123

Its looks and feels like I'm reading less, but I don't know.. Comics are a very quick medium to read. It artificially pads my stats. This year I read not even half as many comics, and read 6 more book-books.

Its interesting to see that while most of my pals reach 50 book-books pretty easily, I do not. I wonder if I keep reading less comics what my actual reading rate will be. I know that I had a few months or books that I was stuck on. I'm not too worried, and I hope I keep or increase my current reading rate.
