Yanno, I had this all written out, but forgot to publish lol.
What are you finished reading?
Magical Boy Volume 1: A Graphic Novel by The Kao - This is a cute YA book about a transman being from a long lineage of magical girls. Its cute, but kind of shallow. Maybe its about the right speed of a YA book, and I do appreciate that the main villains are christians. But there is a religious girl who joins the magical boy squad who is in the closet. And like, as someone that sees myself p deeply there, i wish they would have made this a bigger plot instead of "im cool with teh gays now" in the span of 100 pages or whatever.
Also, I've read just a boatload of smaller comiczines, don't know how to count these, but that's a later-me problem:
The Secret History of Black Punk: Record Zero by Raeghan Buchanan - Honestly, this was really fun. I wasn't expecting it to be as small as it was, but there were still bands I hadn't heard of. Also, the art is cool as hell.
Story of a Weird Kid by Althea - Very short, but cool art with some quotes.
The Saddest Angriest Black Girl In Town by Robyn Smith - An interesting zine-comic about the intersection of all three of these identities. I've been thinking a lot about how I have a lot of problems with anger, and that probably resided with me the strongest.
Ode to Keisha by Versal - A sweet, short story about Black friendships. I may pass this along to Toria.
Until the Day We Die by Sharon et Yoshi - A sweet short story about two people who have 24 hours left to live on a desolate planet. I didn't expect the end where one person sacrifices their life for the other. It was sad, but kind of sweet.
Stray by Molly Mendoza - I think this was my favorite out of all these smaller press and size zines I read.
Strange Glances by Raeghan Buchanan - Quotes about punk with cool art. I didn't realise till after I bought it that it was done by the same person who did the Black punk zine.
Hops & Books by Eishin & Cammy - An adorable pairing of beers with books. Short but delightful.
Montana Diary by Whit Taylor - A jaunt through Montana with an interracial couple.
Fruiting Bodies by Ashley Robin Franklin - A shitlord gets eaten by a strange forest monster.
The Changeling, Volume 1 by Tina Lugo - I really disliked this one. Way too much jargon, super high fantasy, idk... I'll drop it int the little free library.
ish by Adam de Souza - three short stories all about one thing, grief. I also really enjoyed this one. But I'm kind of a sucker for stories about surviving when a loved one dies lately.
Gorgeous By Cathy G. Johnson - two very cool anarchist punks crash a car and fuck a girl over. This is really sad and just reminds you that there's no justice in this damn world.
Cicatrix by Elle - generational trauma winds up showing up as OCD and other strange disorders the author cannot seem to diagnose nor fix, except when she starts to come to terms with the familial trauma and all that.
What have you currently reading?
Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds by Adrienne Maree Brown - I didn't read any this week. I need to get back on it.
The Low, Low Woods by Carmen Maria Machado (Author), Dani (Illustrator) - I haven't gotten very far with this one, but some strange things are happening in this rural town in Pennsylvania. Two girls wake up not remembering anything for the last several hours, which seems to be a common yet terrifying occurrence here.
