what are you reading wednesday?
Feb. 13th, 2019 02:41 pmOkay, I'm reading a lot of comics lately, so it looks like I'm just rolling in my reading, but really, comics are just quick reads.
What have I finished Reading:
Unwritten by Mike Carey - I can't think of anything else to say that I haven't already said. I think in lieu of real mystery and intrigue, the author just kept withholding information to make you want to read more, and it really just left me confused. A lot came together in the last trade, so that made it a little more enjoyable, but I'm still pretty meh on the series.
Black Hammer vol 3 by Jeff Lemire - disclaimer: jeff lemire is one of my favorite comic authors. Black Hammer is about a group of superheroes that defeat a villain called "antigod" and find themselves transported to a strange small town-esque universe where if they try to leave the bounds of the town, they will die. This trade had some huge turns that really caught me off guard. I'm glad these are coming out quickly because I can't wait for the next trade.
The Fade Out Act 3 by Ed Brubaker - This is another one I wasn't feeling but Z wanted to get the last volume. This is a comic set in the movie industry in the 1940s. A movie star was murdered and a writer keeps investigating to find out what happened because he suspects a covered up. Also the writer isn't actually the writer, but a front for another writer who has been blacklisted for being a suspected communist. It was an okay mystery but had a lot of characters to keep straight for a 3 trade comic.
Dept. H Vol 4 by Matt Kindt - This was the conclusion of this series. Its a comic thats another murder mystery that takes place at the bottom of the ocean in a research lab where they're discovering about the horrors of the ocean while also searching for a cure for some kind of sickness that has affected people on the surface. I like how they wrapped everything up. Great read.
Undertaker (BOOM comics) by Chad Dundas - So, I've heard good stuff about the boom wwe comics. This was a christmas present, but I was excited to read it. it was thoroughly meh. Its entirely in kayfabe (as in, wrestling mythology is taken as real and factual) and, idk, it just jumps around trying to capture the mystique of a lot of the dead man's wrestlemania moments, but its so ADHD it doesn't really do justice to any of them. It does do a good job trying to weave all the iterations of the undertaker into one overarching story but doesnt do a good job establishing the undertaker as he is now- a mythological diety tbh. oh well.
What am I Reading:
AD After Death by Scott Snyder - I picked this up because Jeff Lemire does the art. Its supposedly about a world that has found a cure for death. I haven't gotten that far yet. Its not exactly a comic, its more like prose with some pictures, so I think this'll be a longer read. Z says its good, so we'll see.
