I've been sick all week, so I've done a lot of reading.

What have you finished reading?:

The Woods Vol. 7, 8 and 9 by Tynion IV, James (Author), Michael Dialynas (Illustrator) - This was a lot of fun. It was honestly really good considering its meant for YA folks, I believe. And, spoilers, they do make it home.

To Build a Fire: Based on Jack London's Classic Story by Christophe Chabouté (Author) - This was devastating and beautiful. Im familiar with the story but it still hit me hard. One of the best I've read this week.

The Year of the Beasts by Cecil Castellucci - This is a half YA novel, half graphic novel, switching every other chapter. The two stories seem incredibly disjointed till you get to the end... which makes you want to re-read all the graphic novel parts again. Nate Powell did the comic part, and I'm a big fan of what he has done, and I wish he'd create more stuff.

Seven to Eternity Volume 1 by Rick Remender (Author), Jerome Opeña (Artist), Matt Hollingsworth (Artist) - Man, Remender is so fucking broody. This is, like, an interesting concept. Basically the main characters father refuses to ever listen to a compromise from the mud king. But maybe the son will? But its so fucking emo and long winded. It really reminds me of Black Science in that way. Like I really like Deadly Class and Low, his brooding works for those comics, but not for this one. Regrettably, my husband must be part emo cuz he likes it, so I'll probably eventually see more of this comic.

Skim by Mariko Tamaki (Creator), Jillian Tamaki (Creator) - This is a beautiful coming of age story, but it did one thing that didnt sit right with me. The girl falls in love with her teacher, who is a grown ass woman, and the woman reciprocates. The teacher kisses the girl, and then swiftly pulls away and leaves to another school. Maybe that is responsible(?) of her, but it also makes her kind of a fucking pedophile and it squicked me out the *whole* *time*. Poor Skim. I hope she finds a girlfriend her age. The stuff that didn't involve a pedo teacher was really eloquent and well put. definitely reminded me of high school and how troublesome it is. Another plot point involves a girl whose exboyfriend kills himself and how the school really rallys around that but then becomes morbid. Really reminded me of my dad dying and people not knowing how to address it. This one stuck with me, minus the icky factor.

Chiggers by Hope Larson (Author, Illustrator) - Girls in summer camp! The main character has a bunch of friends, and then a new friend that the old friends dont like. Everyone kind of sucks here, but its a YA book, but it REALLY felt like it had no point. It wasn't bad, just... i felt like i wasted my time reading it lol.

Heathen: Volume 2 by Natasha Alterici (Author, Artist), Charles Martin (Editor), Adrian F. Wassel (Editor) - A woman viking is going to go and fuck up Odin, with the help of some valkyries and minor gods. This comic is so good I'd insert clap emojis if I weren't lazy. The main character makes friends with some mermaids to get help to sail north to where odin resides. Its a shame I read this BEFORE the next book, and not AFTER.

Wizzywig by Ed Piskor (Author, Artist) - holy shit this book is written in 2012 and is full of sexist and transphobic bullshit. it IS a story that takes places in the 80s and 90s but hold the fucking phone i dont fucking care its not an excuse. its still going to get read by folks that are in 2012 (and beyond lol). also, i /severely/ judge people who deadname Chelsea Manning. With THAT out of the way, this was a book about hacking and phreaking, mostly revolving around a fictional guy and the subsequent arrest. It feels a little long winded at times, the author could have shortened this by 100 pages and nothing would have been lost, but it was sort of a fun read. But because of the sexism and transphobia, I don't really recommend this to anyone. Shame, this had been on my wish list for a while, since I'm all about 80s and 90s computing and shit. Oh well.

Sword Daughter Volume 1 by Brian Wood (Author), Mack Chater (Illustrator), Lauren Affe (Illustrator) - A girl and her father are the only one to survive a brutal raid on their village. They are separated, they reunite. And theyre out for fucking revenge. Oddly, while internal monologues of the girl exist, she only talks in pictographs which is weird, but interesting. The pace is slow, it feels like a tarentino movie. Its good. But I'll read anything by Brian Wood.

Giant Days Vol. 4 by John Allison (Author), Liz Fleming Lissa Treiman Whitney Cogar Max Sarin (Illustrator) - Giant Days is technically a spin off from Scary Go Round which was a webcomic I used to read, like, eons ago. That said, it doesn't really tie into it at all, its more of a Fun Fact at this point. It follows 3 girls in college and its light and delightful.

What are you currently reading?:

Tank Girl Action by Alan Martin (Author), Brett Parson (Illustrator) - Join tank girl and her wacky crew as they go on vacation, create a weird vehicle thats nuclear powered and has a black hole in it, and the vehicle gets hijacked.
