What are you reading Wednesday?
Sep. 16th, 2020 09:46 amWhat have you finished reading?
Lumberjanes: Campfire Songs(Lumberjanes #72.5) by Shannon Watters (Creator), Nicole Andelfinger, Brittney Williams, Seanan McGuire , Mari Costa, Liz Prince, et al - Nothing to really say that hadn't been said. There was a couple of short stories left, it was all lighthearted and fun.
What are you currently reading?
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead - I'm reading this for my antiracist book club. I, uh, swiftly realized I have no good antiracist nonfiction. Oops. I s2g next time I'll do nonfiction. Its hard to find a nonfiction book that is my "level". Ive been in activism for a while, so I dont need things like privilege or fragility spelled out to me (although, yes, i am prone to these things and often). If y'all got any good ideas for antiracist nonfiction that isnt "babys first book about race" I'm all ears. I also might be judging stuff too harshly, but I'm still open to recommendations.
Anyway, this book follows a girl named Cora. She is born a slave and she works in the cotton fields. She has a small patch of land she tends that she inherited from her grandmother. After her mother runs away, they try to take away her plot of land. Someone builds a doghouse there. She smashes the doghouse with a hatchet. People ostracize her more. Eventually another slave, who has never talked to her, asks her if she wants to escape. A white man connects them with the Underground Railroad. In this alternate universe, its a literal railroad.
The book is well written and just a constant punch in the face about how slaves were treated like animals and forced to marry/breed with others for "stock". Its all things I know, but its well written and hits hard. You know those feelings of empathy pain? I get those constantly while reading this. Its not uplifting, but its good.
