The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison by Hugh Ryan (Author) - So women in the early 1900-40's could just be charged with "prostitution" for just walking around. Basically being AFAB and not having a man around was enough to get you thrown in jail. As the US gets more prosperous, their social safety net programs, especially "corrections", gets no funding. This book is specifically about a prison known for having queer women and AFAB folks arrested in greenwich village in NYC, i just found these tidbits interesting.
