What have you finished reading:
City of Thieves by David Benioff - So, this was like an action movie. non-stop action with improbable sequence after improbable sequence. And one of the main characters is basically a gary sue. women fawn over him and he always has something clever to say. Oh and women only exist as sex objects. But that isnt to say the book wasnt enjoyable. The breakneck pace means its always entertaining at least. But also simultaneously tragic since its ww2, and everyone in leningrad is starving. I guess the author is a showrunner for Game of Thrones and, uh, yeah, that makes sense here. bleak, sex, action. check check check.
Oh, when we went to Tyler we went to the comic book shop. which are, yanno, quick reads:
God Country by Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw (Illustrator), Jason Wordie (Illustrator), John Hill (Illustrator) - This is easily the best thing I've read this year thus far, I think. Its a story about a family dealing with a father with alzheimers. a magic sword comes from space and gives godlike powers, and also brings his memory back. its a great story and a lot of great analogies without being obtuse. I really recommend it even for folks not into comics.
Ringside vol 1 by Joe Keatinge, Nick Barber (Illustrations) - This was okay. It was obviously written by a wrestling fan who never wrestled before or even got a /good/ behind the scenes look. a wrestler couldnt perform for even a few years without occasionally shooting on someone. Basically its a crime drama with wrestlers but at some point they say a wrestler who had been performing for years had never been in a real fight lol. like. so many submissions could be turned into shoots really fking quick so it was such an obvious plot hole to me. the art/color is really nice though. but idk. i wouldnt pay full price for the other volumes but if i saw them at half price books, id pick it up
Gideon Falls vol 2 by Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino (Contributor) - Like I said, I love Jeff Lemire. And this story is no different. This is a story about.. uh, weird spooky shit and unexplained disappearances and shit. The ending of this trade is so.fucking.creepy. Maybe its because I've been fragile lately but I felt legitimately spooked. Would recommend.
What are you reading:
Get in Trouble by Kelly Link - No progress this week. We should maybe finish this Friday when we go home though.
Sixty Degrees North: Around the World in Search of Home by Malachy Tallack - This is a nonfiction book about someone whose father passes away and they go back home to shetland and decide to checkout other countries north of the 60th parallel. i thought itd be very evoking, but its mostly just okay. i dont quite know what this book wants to be. part travel memoir. part historical facts about the countries. We started in Shetland and now we're in greenland. So its slow moving too. Maybe itll pick up.
