What have you finished reading?

Cucumber Quest: The Flower Kingdom by Gigi D.G. - This comic went from 0 to gay real quick. Rosemaster is trans, the flower kingdom wound up having 2 kings, Almond and Peridot have a crush on each other. It was just pretty unexpected. Obviously this is good, more childens books need queer representation. Just weird to see none in 3 books and suddenly a whole lot. Anyway, this was really light and sweet and good. With no intention on publishing the 5th book, I read it online (I had no clue but i guess Cucumber Quest started as a webcomic) and even wound up reading a lot of the author's other comics online. All good shit.

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me by Mariko Tamaki (Author), Rosemary Valero-O'Connell (Illustrator) - Here's a gay love story that everyone needs to hear. It honestly reminded me of my ex-girlfriend a bit. Basically its a lesbian couple, but one of the girls is kind of manipulative and kind of shitty at best and abusive at worst. Obviously this could have been a non-gay story too, but talked also about the gravity of knowing people fought for your right to have a gf in high school. It has a lot of nuance, just like Tamaki's other work. And oh my god the art is fucking beautiful.

Are You Listening? by Tillie Walden (Author, Illustrator) - This was a surreal story about a girl running away and then meets another girl. They're on a road trip through west texas and pick up a mysterious cat. The open up to each other about some serious hurts. But a lot of like, the road, and the cat and stuff are all symbols of, like, taking control of your life, or death or something. Uh, I'm a little too literal to understand what the message was sometimes. Maybe this is just a flaw of mine- I generally need things spelled out a little better. And no spelling happens. But it was still good and I took away some stuff. But I'm also still confused.

What are you currently reading?

A Dance with Dragons by George R R Martin - No progress this week.

Rosalie Lightning: A Graphic Memoir by Tom Hart (Author) - This is a story about someone whose daughter dies suddenly when she isn't even 2 years old. Its about grief, loss, and tragedy and basically 100% up my alley right now. I can relate to it a lot considering the loss of Skittles, but also other losses in my life. I've cried reading this like 5 times now. Its very cerebral and feels like im reading someones journal of their grief. Its good though. Just, you know, heavy and i'm crying.
