What did you read last week, but forgot to include?

Nightlights by Lorena Alvarez - This is a cute YA novel, about, as far as I can tell, a kid getting a mental illness or something. Honestly, the story didn't grip me, and it, i guess, is going to be a series, and that extra turned me off. The art is gorgeous though.

What did you finish reading?

Save It for Later: Promises, Protest, and Parenthood by Nate Powell - This was relevant and good, although I don't know that I agree with how he is, like, i dont know. Do young kids really need the anxiety of knowing the last president is hella racist? Protest is important, although I think as a parent, the author approaches it differently from someone who doesn't have any kids. This was good. I love his stuff and gave me some things to think about.

The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir by Thi Buj - The story of the vietnam war, from the perspective of someone who is actually vietnamese. This is a heartbreaking story, although its obviously anti-communist from the start. I mean, its not like I think vietnam was any good or anything in that situation. Just. its their story. Its a beautiful and sad story.

American Cult edited by Robyn Chapman - I. ... I read the first page that defines a cult and. uh. i think i lived in a cult before? Actually a cult that used to be associated with my old cult makes a feature in this book. Its an anthology of different american cults. Some of them hit real hard. The one on the Westboro baptist church was... really relatable. I wanted a whole book from that one. There was a lot of stuff I also didn't know. Like about the Children of God and how they abused children. Considering my own cult had a child sex abuse scandal it really got me thinking... Anyway, if you like or are interested in cults, pick this one up.

What are you currently reading?

Paying the Land by Joe Sacco - I'm only a few pages into this. Joe Sacco's art is gorgeous, but also, like, it gives me anxiety. Anyway, thus far he is interviewing an indigenous canadian about how they lived with and on the land.

Ohhh I am dying to read Paying the Land. Embarrassingly I have an upcoming assignment about it but I haven't gotten a copy yet.

All of these books sound really good, actually.
