What have you finished reading?

Cruel Summer by Ed Brubaker (Author), Sean Phillips (Artist), Jacob Phillips (Artist) - This wound up being a really great noir comic with a lot of twists and turns. Not a happy ending, but I really wasn't expecting one.

Misc zines! -

Soupy Leaves Home by Cecil Castellucci (Author), Jose Pimienta (Illustrator) - This is a comic set in the great depression about a girl leaving home and hitchhiking across the country. Its a cute story, but involves a magical hobo and not judging people by looks and also a greater story about a girl who wants her freedom in a society that won't give it to her; she takes it by force. Its YA though, so it probably always needed a magical hobo.

Nanjing: The Burning City by Ethan Young (Author, Illustrator) - This is a graphic novel about the horrible things the Japanese did in the city of Nanking. Its brutal, but makes great use of art and tries to humanize soldiers, civilians, etc. It doesnt focus too hard on the historical event, but centers around a general and his subordinate trying to escape capture.

The Magic Fish: (A Graphic Novel) by Trung Le Nguyen (Author) - This is a beautiful, perfect YA graphic novel. Its a coming out story, but instead of it being specifically about coming out, its more about the stories we tell, the words we know/dont know, and everything else in between. I was shocked that the school counsellor (I believe its a private school?) basically said that coming out is like a death in the family. Felt very... conversion therapy-esque. Also the art is so goddamn gorgeous.

Welcome to St. Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure: A Graphic Novel by Lewis Hancox (Author) - Another YA coming out story, but this one very blunt and direct. Its a trans man (hell yes so under represented) talking about him coming out and becoming a man. Its set up as if he's talking to his younger self and I'd think it's an awesome book for any kid questioning their gender, although more geared towards teenagers. I think it also tackles the gender roles vs gender identity conundrum really well. Hell, I felt seen in my own trans-ness reading this one.

Beasts of Burden: Wise Dogs and Eldritch Men by Evan Dorkin (Author), Ben Dewey (Illustrator) - This is a fun comic about dogs (and occasionally cats) who help fight paranormal phenomena. This one is about a weird eldritch horror in the woods. It was good.

What are you currently reading?

Beasts of Burden: Neighborhood Watch by Evan Dorkin (Author), Sarah Dyer (Author), Mike Mignola (Author), Jill Thompson (Illustrator), Benjamin Dewey (Illustrator) - This is more paranormal pet stuff. But this time its short vignettes. Man, these stories were creepier and heavier than I expected, although I have been emotional lately.

Also, I'm almost healthy :) Ill be back to non-comics after this one.

Regarding the Magic Fish’s description of coming out being like a death in a family, oof. I’ve never read that book, but was sad to read that part of your description :(
