what are you reading wednesday?
Aug. 21st, 2019 12:09 pmWe're on a comics train again, so toot toot~
What have you finished reading?:
Chew Volume 12: Sour Grapes by John Layman (Author), Rob Guillory (Artist) - so the chickens are aliens and are gonna kill anyone who has eaten chicken so they make chicken illegal and this was all just. meh. i never liked it, but i never hated it enough to stop. oh well. its over.
Tiger Lung by Simon Roy (Author) - this comic explores a sort of stone age (?) tribe of humans, specifically focusing on the shaman. It is purposefully vague to not step on any indigenous toes, but honesty enhances the story. Its just a couple short vignettes and i dont know if id buy a sequel but it wasn't bad. the art was really cool and metal.
Lost Soul, Be at Peace by Maggie Thrash - This is a sequel to the book Honor Girl which I loved, about a teenage girls coming out story. This picks up generally in the same place, but less about gay stuff, and more about relationships with parents and facing the ghosts of our past. It was very good, but not as good as honor girl, but that bar is very high.
Starve Volume 2 by Brian Wood (Author), Danijel Zezelj (Artist), Dave Stewart (Artist) - main character basically says 'fuck everything', quits the game show, opens a coop in a food desert in NYC and oh my god so good. the first half was fine, but the second half is SO GOOD. Brian Wood is probably at his best doing political stuff.
Trees Volume 2 by Warren Ellis (Author), Jason Howard (Artist) - spooky tree like aliens have touched down on earth and kill indiscriminately and its hard to figure out what triggers them. Lots of mystery here, setting up and not much answers. I'm interested though. this second volume came out in 2016 though. Where's the next one? the internet says it should be out soon???? looks like one single issue has, anyway. Sounds like this story is never gonna get told lol
Lumberjanes Vol. 12 Jackalope Springs Eternal by Shannon Watters (Creator), Noelle Stevenson (Creator), Brooklyn Allen (Creator) - lumberjanes is a queer, adorable young adult comic taking place at a summer camp. This issue, they go hunting for a jackalope and then theres a camp newspaper debaucle with eerily accurate horoscopes. this comic is for everyone and adorable and good.
Ivy by Sarah Oleksyk - This one was unexpectedly heavy. I was assuming this was a gay romance coming of age story, but hoo boy i was wrong. Ivy want to go to art school but her mom wants her to go to business school. ivy secretly gets accepted into an art college with a scholarship but hides it from her mom, meets a long distance boyfriend in the meantime, and she keeps getting her actions and feelings constantly misinterpreted. everyone is terrible, but its high school so it makes sense. ivys mom finds out she hid her college acceptance from her and has a complete melt down, fucking hits her, and says a ton of fucked up shit. so ivy and her new long distance boyfriend run away and thumb their way to georgia. she has a meltdown in a squat with some other traveller kids and eventually goes home
haha while i wasnt 17 when i had my squat meltdown, it sure hit home. shout out to the scabies infested squat in portland. this was really fucking good. i recommend this, even tho everyone kind of sucks.
What are you currently reading:
The Backstagers Vol. 3 by Tynion IV, James (Author), Sam Johns (Author), Walter Baiamonte Rian Sygh (Illustrator), Brittney Williams (Illustrator), Caitlin Rose Boyle (Illustrator), Katy Farina (Illustrator) - The backstagers is basically the boy version of lumberjanes. its so fucking queer and it is pure and good. this volume just has some holiday vignettes but was a good palate cleanser after Ivy hit me with the fuckin feels.
