The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead - After escaping the plantation, they are in South Carolina. It seems like a breath of fresh air at first. But there is a person who hunts down escaped slaves and he is tracking them. Additionally, Cora has to work in a "slave exhibit" in a museum. And they are forcefully sterilizing women who have had 2 children. After a while Cora realizes this is just slavery again, and she isn't really free. (technically she was still property of the government anyway. As she and Caesar decide to go further north on the railroad, the slave hunter finds them. Cora and Caesar are separated.
