what are you reading wednesday? - Thursday edition

What have you finished reading:

The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman - So spoilers if you plan on reading the books or watching the series but the end of the book is basically that because the dimension cutting knife can cut ANYTHING theyre going to use the knife to KILL GOD. now i knew that they kill god in the book, but i thought it was a metaphor. or like, they kill someone who represents god or the church or something. but no. they straight up are going to go kill god and this is so metal.

Chew Volume 7: Bad Apples Paperback by John Layman (Author), Rob Guillory (Artist) - so this is sort of a buddy cop comedy comic. the plot is that a bird flu broke out and chicken in all forms is illegal. the main character can eat things and immediately know the past of the things eaten, and this world is full of folks with powers like that. eat things and know their futures, write things so well you can taste them, eat things and gain super powers. etc.

Chew Volume 8: Family Recipes by John Layman (Author), Rob Guillory (Artist) - Ill continue my thoughts here since they blend together anyway. this comic started in like 08 or something so i was giving it a pass for some of its really shitty (sexist, homophobic, hella transphobic) "jokes" but these issues are like this one is 2013 and it shows no sign of stopping. this comic couldnt pass the bechdel test i dont think. i hate the way women are drawn. That said, if i turn my brain off its a fun/funny premise. the bird flu is shaking up to be a massive govt conspiracy. so im continuing on.

Chew Volume 9: Chicken Tenders by John Layman (Author), Rob Guillory (Artist) - I just finished 8 last night so i havent even cracked this one open yet.

I thought that the third book was almost completely terrible but I do appreciate that they did the thing.

Well Im too far in to turn back now. I am a little curious as to why they want To Do The Thing because, uhhh, its kind of unclear and last i checked Lord Asrael seemed kind of like a bad guy.

I'm assuming they're killing god on behest of Asrael?

Maybe it's his way of saying evil will exist, even with the death of god. That "god" (the physical incarnation, or mental model) is irrelevant to suffering in reality (thus furthering the atheist message (as I hear he supports)).

Not a bad way to look at it. I guess as I read it, I'll keep that in mind.

but basically, Lord Asrael is Lyras fucking dad, but they get into a physical tussle near the end of book 1 and theres an interdimensional shift near the north pole and lyra winds up going to another dimension. idk maybe it was ok because ~fate~ but wait. thats not an atheist principle at all! lol

LOL that makes me think of this video game idea I wanted to make.

You're a demon who slays satan and escapes hell. Then you fight your way through terrestrial realm to heaven and battle the angels using the souls you've captured (to power your now superdemonic abilities of course) to slay god, thus liberating what remains from the tyranny of good and evil.


I pictured a sword with like a "hookshot" mechanic (somethign like Ivy from Soul Caliburs Sword-Whip, so it can break into pieces and be shot to ZIP to target locations), so you can like, climb and swing (it'd be a 2d sidescroller with a nod towards Kid Icarus, only more actiony)
