The last several days I've been watching the new His Dark Materials show done by hbo/bbc. I wish the book wasn't so fresh in my mind because I know literally every step. But that isn't what has bothered me.
I like Lin Manuel Miranda but I am so fucking /offended/ at what has happened to Lee Scoresby's character. He sort of has been turned from a gruff texan cowboy to a sort of ... bumbling, rogueish comedic relief character. Lee was probably my favorite character, and most show characters aren't such a far departure from their book counterparts. But Lee is like a whole new character. Hell, okay in the book Lee at one point had been in love with a witch, Serafina. its sort of a tragic love story. In the show, they give that plot point to motherfucking fader koram (fadder? coram? i forget the spelling).
I'm okay with departures from the book. Hell, I hope the show really fixes the ending of the trilogy. Mrs Coulter and Lord Azreal deserve NO FUCKING REDEMPTION. Not an IOTA. But every time Lee gets into some zany adventure because hes stealing or wheelin and dealin i just sort of die a little inside.
also, presently, our rogue doesnt necessarily want to help Lyra and he has a heart-to-heart with Serafina. I have a feeling they may eventually fall in love again to follow the book. But anyway, Serafina is like 'blahblah you gotta help the chosen one' and hes all like 'money or whatever' and they basically say out loud that Lee is helping Lyra because of *fucking fate*. Which is a strange fucking motivation considering that, like, this is atheist narnia. Emphasis on atheist.
anyway, im not gonna stop watching it or anything, but this show has some weird casting. I think Lord Azreal's casting kinda sucks too because he seems more frumpy than world travelled. Its a minor complaint, but I imagined him more like an Indiana Jones meets Dr Livingstone type. I do think Lord Boreal's casting is p spot on though. Also I was surprised they continued with calling the G*ptians that even though the word, is, like, literally a slur. its (almost) 2020. We can do better. Also, this is LITERALLY a fantasy world. Make up a new word for a band of travelling folks that live outside of "normal" society.
