what are you reading wednesday?
Oct. 23rd, 2019 11:26 amWhat have you finished reading:
[back on the comic train again, until I leave for vacation]
Age of Reptiles: Ancient Egyptians by Ricardo Delgado (Author, Illustrator) - DINOSAURS. it felt like a western without words, and dinosaurs. It was good. I hated trying to find this comic in the second hand market though.
Tank Girl: Tank Girl All Stars by Alan Martin (Author), Brett Parson (Illustrator) - Its the typical bizarro tank girl fare in short vignettes celebrating 30 years of tank girl.
Sword Daughter Volume 2 by Brian Wood (Author), Mack Chater (Illustrator), Lauren Affe (Illustrator) - I read the first volume of this a few months ago. Its a father and daughter going on a brutal revenge-murder quest. Basically it shows the father letting down the daughter, but the father is not killed. this causes a rift between then. We know the daughter will eventually grow up to be a badass.
Paper Girls Volume 6 by Brian K Vaughan (Author), Cliff Chiang (Artist), Matt Wilson (Artist) - This was the last trade in this story but I think this is the first time i've written about it here? Its a group of girls who deliever papers but get stuck in the future, then the past, and then just a bizarre time loop. The ending was really good. But i like anything brian k vaughn writes.
The Wicked + The Divine Volume 9: Okay by Kieron Gillen (Author), Jamie Mckelvie (Artist), Matt Wilson (Artist) - Another last trade in a story. I know I have written about this one before. 12 gods are reincarnated every 80 years, they live 2 years and then they die. They try to live longer. I don't want to spoil this ending in case anyone is going to read it, but the ending was unexpected and phenomenal.
Frogcatchers by Jeff Lemire (Author) - This was a short read written and drawn by Jeff Lemire. His art really enhances this short story basically about life and death. I honestly think I will revisit this book many times, especially when I am feeling exceptionally afraid of death.
Monstress Volume 4 by Marjorie Liu (Author), Sana Takeda (Artist) - This is a series basically where arcane creatures and humans are on the brink of war. the art is absolutely phenomenal. There's a lot of twists and turns in this one, and explains a recent characters betrayal. Cats can have multiple tails and can be nekomancers which is an amazing word lol. This is likely a series I'll want to re-read once the whole thing is done because there's a lot of political stuff I forget between trades.
Black Hammer: Streets of Spiral by Jeff Lemire (Author), Dean Ormston (Illustrator), Mike Allred (Illustrator) - I feel a little duped by this one. I thought it was the next Black Hammer book, but it has a few short vignettes and then basically an encyclopedia explaining how the universe is all pulled together. Which is helpful, really it is, but I wanted substance and plot. I didn't really need to buy this :\
Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell (Author), Faith Erin Hicks (Illustrator), Sarah Stern (Contributor) - This was the perfect time of year to read this! Two seniors in high school are working their last year at the pumpkin patch they love. The girl, deja, who is bi/pan is helping the dude finally talk to this girl he's had a crush on for years but never even got to know her. This is just a delightfully wholesome and cute love story.
Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass by Lilah Sturges (Author), Shannon Watters (Creator), Noelle Stevenson (Creator), Brooklyn Allen (Creator), Grace Ellis (Creator), polterink (Illustrator) - So the lumberjanes are now doing one off stories too, on top of the main story. This story focuses on Mollys relationship with Mal and is very sweet. It had a lot to say about friendships, fears, and insecurities too.
Stage Dreams by Melanie Gillman (Author, Illustrator) - A lesbian robber robs a stage coach and captures a trans woman named grace to hold as ransom. instead, grace convinces the outlaw to let her help in the next heist. they steal maps from the confederacy to give to the union. they fall in love. its delightful and theres a ton of real history in the annotations which is really cool. I hadn't realised the civil war made it that far west at all.
What are you currently reading?:
The Black Monday Murders Volume 2 by Jonathan Hickman (Author), Tomm Coker (Artist) - I read the first one about a month ago. Basically the premise if what if evil shitty capitalist bankers not only got their power from indirect death, but also direct death like human sacrifice and shit like that. This is starting to also talk about how both give the banks their power. however theyre making one of the bankers out to be "one of the good ones" which is kind of annoying. but still, fuck capitalism, amirite?
