what are you reading wednesday?
Feb. 5th, 2020 09:09 amWhat have you finished reading?
Redneck Volume 1: Deep in the Heart, Redneck Volume 2: The Eyes Upon You, and Redneck Volume 3: Longhorns by Donny Cates (Author), Lisandro Estherren (Artist), Dee Cunniffe (Artist)- I figured I'd put these all in one line ( still cutting for undead creatures that bother a pal )
Come Again by Nate Powell (Author) - this comic tells the story of two families in a farming commune in the ozarks. one member is having an affair with another, but no one seems to know, which, having lived in a commune before, seems literally impossible lol. Theres a secret abandoned mine where they have their trysts but it also seems to be haunted. This was really good, and I like Nate Powells stuff. He doesn't create as prolifically as other artists I follow.
Grass Kings Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 by Matt Kindt (Author), Tyler Jenkins (Illustrator) - This reminded me a lot of briggsland. Its another off the grid community attempting to be outside of the US/US Law. The community is basically run by 3 brothers mostly and a hodge podge of people. It starts with someone swimming into the grass kingdom to escape the US because of an abusive spouse. They protect her and learn that the kingdom may have a murderer in their midst. So the second book pivots more to a murder mystery. People are starting to distrust each other and all that.
Black Science Volume 4: Godworld by Rick Remender (Author), Matteo Scalera (Artist) - Its been almost 6 months since I wrote about this one. Its a scifi comic, where theyre like dimension hopping but wind up stuck, fighting with each other, and eventually dispersing. Basically the same patterns of their interpersonal relationships sort of keep appearing infinitely. Anyway, this trade centers around the main scientist and him sort of overcoming his childhood traumas to take responsibility for his actions. He's trying to find surviving members of his crew. He does find his ex who sort of is the reason literally everyone is trapped in the dimensions and he sort of screws her over, which feels petty after all this 'overcoming trauma' stuff. but she was kind of an asshole and deserved it.
Black Science Volume 5: True Atonement by Rick Remender (Author), Matteo Scalera (Artist), Moreno Dinisio (Artist) - So the main character, Grant, hops dimensions to find his daughter Pia. Pia has made a home for herself on this alien world, complete with fiance. Grant fucks everything up and Pia just wants to be left alone. Grant sacrifices his intellect to fix everything for Pia. That sacrifice compels Pia to go with Grant to find the other dimension hoppers. However, Grant just wants her to go to their home-home and tell her mom everything that happened. However they both get trapped in their dimension. And a bunch of the bad guys are still alive! this is a twist I didn't see coming.

Black Science Volume 6: Forbidden Realms and Hidden Truths by Rick Remender (Author), Matteo Scalera (Artist), Moreno Dinisio (Artist) - Grant gets locked into an asylum because the main bad guy, Fadir, made up all these lies. Pia gets a signal that someone she knows has entered her dimension. It turns out to be her brother who is a superhero in hong kong. I feel like this comic hops genres a lot but i'm okay with that.
